The next island heading south was the former English Island of Antigua. On the island are many old forts from the years that England and France fought over the Caribbean Islands. One of the main attractions on the island is Admiral Nelson’s Dockyard. It is now a national park with a well preserved example of a working dockyard of the 1800s. My parents flew to Antigua just a few days after we arrived. After settling into their hotel we began exploring the island. The dockyard was our first stop. It was truly an amazing experience. We really got the sense of what life was like during that time. There is a small museum on site and many buildings beautifully preserved and explanations of their use during the period. During my parents visit Victoria and Alexander soaked up their time with their grandparents. They spent most every night at the hotel. Alexander would sing many of the songs from Hamilton for grandma and Victoria and Grandma would have epic bananagram games lasting into the night. During the day Ashley and I would arrive back at the hotel and we would all load up into our van and explore the island. We swam at different beaches in the warm clear waters of the Caribbean. We hiked to the top of mountains. And we drove through fruit tree plantations. We also explored the ruins of many different fortifications from the colonial times of British rule. Ever since Alexander became comfortable sailing his boat by himself, he has wanted to take Grandpa Murphy sailing. There is a small sailing school in the bay that we anchored Samadhi that rents small sailboats. So for our last day with G & G Murphy we rented two small sailboats. Alexander took Grandpa Murphy sailing around the bay. The boats were great to sail and Alexander had a great time showing his grandparents how he could handle a boat on his own.
